flower of the day

May 25, 2025  •  5 Comments

Memorial Day 2025.  Flags are flying everywhere and flowers lay on the graves or headstones of those who died fighting for this country and democracy.  I will see those later today at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe. But the flowers highlighted in this blog have their own role in bringing smiles to people's faces just because of their complicated beauty.  They are McKana Giant Columbines.  They are also like flags, dancing in the breeze.  Each bloom is slightly different in color, but all have distinctive and graceful spurs.  Light, shadow, and background also impact what the human eye sees and how it reacts to them.  The photographs were taken over a period of three days both in morning and afternoon light.  Since this is a day to remember and ponder, I will say no more but let the columbine speak for themselves.

I have to back up a little and mention the wonderful hummingbird photos. I love those little birds. They hover, go forward and backwards and fly away so quickly.
To your current photos of the columbines, I love their nature design elements. These are cool flowers. It’s wonderful to see this beauty on this somber day. Many mistake this day for honoring all veterans and, that’s ok. But this day is for remembering the memory of those veterans who lost their lives while serving our country. My first name, Manuel, was given to me in remembrance of my Uncle who was the first young man from Grant County NM to be MIA for 5 years and remains finally sent back home from the Korean war. He was 17 years old. Thank you for your wonderful photos and written words Daryl.

The photographs on their own tell their story. They are glorious. The one up top is extraordinary. There's so much going on in this image. It's rich and sensual. The spurs seem like something out of science fiction, more animal that botanical. It's a wonderful grouping as always.

We will spend our midday rallying for the nation the fallen gave their lives to protect. Hopefully, our battle to save democracy honors them, as well.

whimsical, mysterious, magical, giddy, luminous, frivolous, succulent, wonderful, brilliant... all that in one simple flower.
Thank you, Daryl. We all needed these images...
