quality time with...carrots?

July 26, 2026  •  14 Comments

Several weeks ago, a good friend asked me how I came up with ideas for my blogs.  No one had asked me that before.  I proceeded to babble, and in the end rendered a fairly uninformative answer.  However, it did make me think about my process in photography again.  Unless I have assigned myself a project, for instance a landscape or nature shoot,  or I have been hired to do an event such as a wedding, family reunion, or environmental portraiture session, my work is fairly spontaneous.  Regardless of subject matter, the photography process springs forth from seeing something/anything that grabs my interest.  I rarely leave the confines of our home without seeing things I want to photograph.  Even within the mundane, subjects seem to present themselves as great photographic opportunities.  Last week was a perfect example of becoming involved in the unexpected.

I had gone to the Tuesday morning Farmers' Market, procuring everything from mixed lettuce and arugula, to tomatoes, green onions, carrots, and basil, and stuffed everything in a handy canvas bag, to be washed and put away later.  When I was removing the carrot tops, I noticed a funky twist of two carrots, the seeds of which obviously grew together after germinating.  Despite it feeling a bit odd and almost like produce porn, it was definitely something I was required to photograph.   And thus, I found myself spending a good deal of "quality time" with an accidental carrot sculpture.  Four different backdrops, all vertical format, each one shot with natural light.

I love how you explored artistically two "simple" twisted carrots. I like the photo on black background. Two lovers in a passionate embrace. Oh, l'amour!
